Mangcook Dumplings is muslim owned, made with care, cooked fresh and served with sincerity.
People often ask where the name Mangcook comes from and how it’s meant to be said and spelled. Is it mangkuk? mangkook?
We initially wanted to go with a Brunei Malay word so we chose “mangkuk”, which means bowl. It’s one of those everyday words Bruneian’s grew up hearing like when someone says, “ambil mangkuk” before a meal. It feels familiar. It means food is ready.
To keep that same feeling, we kept the sound but changed the spelling. Instead of “kuk”, we used “cook” to reflect the act of cooking, and to make the name feel more natural and accessible in English.
It’s pronounced mang-cook, with the “ng” like in mangga, just like how we’d say it here in Brunei.
To us, Mangcook is more than just a name. It’s a little reminder of home and an invite to “ambil mangkuk…” and come try our food.
We both really love dumplings so whenever we craved them, we would try making them from scratch: folding the wrappers, blending chicken, adjusting the ingredients for the filling. Eventually we thought, since we were always making it, why not ask our friends to try it out.
As it turned out, what began as something just for us soon spread to friends, then friends of friends and soon, people began asking if we were selling them. So, we took it more seriously.
In 2021 we started mangcook dumpling by experimenting with new flavours, even ran our very own pop-up booth for the first time, and eventually now running a home based kitchen with the help of our family. Currently, it has become a full team effort. Still homemade, just with more hands (and more dumplings).
Today, we’re grateful to share mangcook dumplings with families, friends, and our loyal customers across Brunei and we hope to keep going…
